About Three Lagoons
The Three Lagoons Sustainability Program is a community-based environmental initiative in Belize focused on restoring and preserving the country’s coastal ecosystems. This program has several key components aimed at protecting and enhancing Belize’s natural environment:
Reforestation Efforts
The program’s primary focus is on reforestation, particularly of mangrove and mahogany trees in areas that have been devastated by commercial industries or natural disasters. Mangroves are especially important as they serve as natural barriers, protecting Belize’s coastline from hurricanes and storm surges.
Planting Activities
The Three Lagoons Sustainability Program actively engages in planting activities. For example, on March 7th, 2021, the program planted 100 red mangrove seedlings in an area called Laguna Seca as part of their ongoing mangrove reforestation project.
Community Involvement
This initiative is deeply rooted in community participation. As a non-profit organization, it involves local communities in various aspects of its work, including:
- Community cleanups
- Educational programs
- Reforestation activities
Environmental Goals
The program aims to achieve several environmental objectives:
- Restore damaged ecosystems
- Protect biodiversity
- Promote sustainable development
- Support conservation efforts
- Encourage eco-friendly tourism
By focusing on these areas, the Three Lagoons Sustainability Program works to preserve Belize’s precious coastal ecosystems while also engaging and educating local communities about the importance of environmental stewardship.
